The New Wilderness by Irene Scheinmann

The images in this exhibition are an emotional response to the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl and also to the havoc wrought by deforestation and the wars still raging in many parts of the world.

The images are part of a body of work created by Irene Scheinmann between 1991 and 1995 which includes etchings, monoprints and oil paintings. Aftermath (Oil on Canvas)Each of these different pictorial methods bring its own atmosphere. The large oil painting Aftermath (see right) is characterised by richness of colour and depth of shadow. The etchings which form the current exhibition have a more direct graphic starkness.

The five etchings are in the permanent collection of the Karelian Republic Art Museum, Russia, the 4th Block Museum at Kharkiv, Ukraine and also the Department Des Estampes, Bibliotheque Nationale de France.

(Aftermath is currently available for sale. Please see the order page for The New Wildernes.)
