Elmar Gille was born in Heiligenstadt, East Germany in 1947, but has been living in the Netherlands since 1979, when he took Dutch nationality.
After his education in Germany, he studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch. He has been exhibiting his work regularly, both at home and abroad since 1980.
Gille has developed his own engraving process. A layer of paint is applied to a wooden surface and he engraves his pictures in that layer. The resulting relief picks up the ink and produces a print. This technique enables him to work more freely and in a more picturesque way. Sometimes the result is rough, like a diluted oil painting, sometimes velvety, like an elaborate etching.
He describes his clear, colourful landscapes and interiors as "peaceful moments in a world constantly on the move".
